Chimbala

Perched on the edge of the Tongan Plateau and overlooking the Gwembe Valley, Chimbala is a village defined by its agricultural roots and scenic beauty. Located 35km from the nearest town, the village has faced developmental hurdles due to its 7km distance from the nearest truckable bush roads. This isolation has hindered economic progress, confining the community largely to subsistence farming. The heartbeat of Chimbala is its agricultural activities, including small cattle kraals and cultivation of maize, cassava, and sorghum. While there is a small school in the village, the absence of local secondary education limits opportunities for youth, leaving many in a cycle of underemployment and educational constraints. Our partnership with Chimbala is driven by a singular mission: to break the cycle of poverty and create new avenues for youth empowerment. Recognizing the potential locked within this vibrant community, The Euroza Foundation initiated a transformative pilot program. Our journey in Chimbala began with a youth agricultural training scheme focusing on cash-crop farming of sunflower seeds. This initiative not only equipped local youths with essential farming skills but also led to a successful first harvest. Encouraged by this success, the Village Headwoman allocated community land for further cultivation, laying the groundwork for sustainable growth. Building on this momentum, we launched the Chimbala FC Hammermill project – a youth-owned maize processing facility that captures value-added production within the community. This facility not only empowers local farmers by enabling them to command higher prices for their maize but also provides sustainable employment and asset ownership for youth participants. Profits from the hammermill project are funneled into a community fund, democratically used for village impact projects. This model of profit-sharing has already financed initiatives like a community piggery project and a youth maize seed bank, creating a cycle of reinvestment and communal benefit Our efforts extend beyond agriculture, with a youth sports program that has already borne fruit. In its inaugural year, this program nurtured talent like a goalkeeper who now plays for Zambia’s Division 2 - New Monze Swallows FC, showcasing the diverse potentials within Chimbala. In Chimbala, each step forward is a stride towards a future filled with opportunity and growth. The Euroza Foundation is committed to nurturing this journey, believing in the untapped potential of Chimbala's youth and the enduring strength of its community.

Njola

Nestled in the eastern part of Monze District, Njola Village stands at a crucial juncture, serving as a hub for several neighboring communities. Despite its central location, the village faces the challenge of a 26km distance from the nearest town, a barrier that particularly affects access to secondary education for its youthful population. Recognizing the strategic importance of Njola’s location, Euroza's economic empowerment program is focused on transforming this crossroads village into a thriving center for Youth Social Enterprise. The village currently functions as a local maize store for nearby agricultural settlements, but its full potential is yet to be unleashed. Our pilot program is set to establish a youth-owned and operated maize hammermill facility. This project aims to revolutionize the way maize is processed in the village. By milling maize locally into mealie meal, a staple for making nshima, we envisage a future where the village not only meets its own food needs but also adds value to its produce. This initiative is about more than just milling; it’s about retaining and enhancing value within the community, directly benefiting both the youth and surrounding agricultural settlements. In our ongoing dialogue with the community, the need for a reliable water source has emerged as a priority. To address this, we plan to install a bore-hole, ensuring clean and consistent water access for all. This effort complements the expansion of our Njola Youth Sports Programs, further nurturing the physical and social well-being of our youth. Njola is also a center for innovation in agriculture. Here, we are piloting the production of natural organic fertilizer, Zambian Bokashi. This initiative, in collaboration with trainers from the Welsh NGO Friends of Monze, not only enhances agricultural productivity but also empowers our project participants with sustainable farming practices. Ongoing youth bee-keeping projects in collaboration with the Zambian Forestry Department, Njola Village is at the cusp of a significant transformation. Through these initiatives, we aim to unlock the latent potential of this strategically located village, turning challenges into opportunities for growth and sustainability. Join us as we work together with the vibrant community of Njola to create a brighter, more prosperous future.

Makonka

Makonka Village, the most remote of our pilot project locations, lies 50km away from the nearest urban settlement. This isolation, exacerbated by the poor condition of seasonally-accessible bush roads, has significantly hampered economic and social development. Despite these challenges, the village's spirit remains unbroken, and its potential untapped. The village's educational infrastructure is strained, with a small school struggling to accommodate the needs of a growing young population. Many youths find themselves outside the education system due to limited resources and capacity. Healthcare is another pressing concern. The local health center, an ambitious community project, remains incomplete after a decade, lacking essential facilities and infrastructure. Understanding these critical needs, The Euroza Foundation is dedicated to completing the rural health clinic. Our plans include the installation of plumbing and electricity in the main clinician building, construction of additional facilities like a maternity unit, mother shelter, staff housing, proper sanitation facilities, and a waste incinerator. We aim to equip the clinic with essential medical equipment and a 4x4 ambulance, striving to provide accessible healthcare to over 15,000 villagers. Makonka's proximity to a significant reservoir presents a remarkable opportunity for agricultural development. Currently, the use of this water resource is limited due to logistical challenges. Our initiative involves the installation of a solar-powered water pump, a game-changer that will enable effective irrigation over large areas of arable land through a gravity-fed system. This system is set to revolutionize agriculture in Makonka, particularly benefiting the out-of-school youths who have been granted access to this land by the village headmen. Our approach goes beyond mere infrastructure development. We are committed to providing comprehensive training in advanced agricultural practices, focusing on permaculture systems, the production of natural fertilizers, organic pest control, and soil regeneration. These training programs aim to equip the youth with the skills necessary for sustainable and profitable farming. In a collaborative effort with the Zambian Forestry Department, we have initiated beekeeping projects, adding a valuable dimension to the village's agricultural activities. These projects not only provide a source of income but also play a crucial role in environmental conservation and pollination. Our ultimate goal is to transform Makonka into a self-sufficient, economically vibrant community. The seed-funding of a youth-led agricultural enterprise is a significant step towards this goal. We envisage a future where the young farmers of Makonka are not just self-reliant but also key contributors to the region's agricultural economy. In Makonka, every challenge is seen as an opportunity for growth and innovation. With the support of our partners and the resilience of the Makonka community, we are on a path to creating lasting change and prosperity.

Sinyedeende

Sinyendeende, a small community in the western part of Monze District, stands at a crossroads of challenge and opportunity. Despite its advantageous proximity to the nearest major town, only 7km away, the community faces significant barriers to economic development. The limited opportunities for the youth, coupled with a lack of education beyond grade 7, have created an 'out-of-school and out-of-work' poverty cycle. The local community school, ceasing at grade 7, leaves many youths without further educational prospects. The high costs, limited availability of secondary education in Monze Town, and transportation issues further exacerbate this problem. Economically, the village is largely dependent on subsistence farming, offering little in the way of diversification or growth. After extensive collaboration with community stakeholders and discussions with youth participants, we've identified aquaculture as a promising avenue for economic empowerment. Our focus is on cultivating tilapia fish for the nearby town market. This initiative includes a secondary venture of growing fish fingerlings and producing blood-meal for other rural aquaculture projects. Our Zambian Director, a qualified fish-farmer, is leading the training efforts for this initiative. This training is integrated with our sports programs, which have garnered enthusiastic participation and are soon to be augmented by the construction of Sinyendeende’s first netball pitch. The village headmen have wholeheartedly embraced our project, reflecting the community's readiness for change. In recognition of this, the Euroza Foundation has been invited to develop a 2-hectare permaculture system on community land. This system will serve as a training hub for youth participants, not just from Sinyendeende but across our projects, leveraging the village’s central location. In Sinyendeende, we see a future where economic activities transcend traditional farming, where education and training in sustainable practices open new doors for the youth, and where the community thrives through innovative and sustainable initiatives. We are committed to making this vision a reality, transforming Sinyendeende into a model of rural empowerment and resilience.

Our Pilot Programme

To kickstart our mission, we launched a Pilot Program to develop our approach and provide a launchpad for future strategic planning. Our Pilot Program is taking place in rural communities living in challenging poverty paradigms across Monze District in Zambia’s agrarian Southern Province - an area in the midst of recovery from severe multi-year droughts. Despite difficulties throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the Zambia team made huge inroads conducting a district-wide community assessment process that has led us to four communities excited to work on empowering their youth to escape conditions of rural poverty. Currently there are 250 vulnerable youths participating in our Pilot Program.
